He graduated in Human Sciences (Anthropology) at the University of Oxford in 1984. He has also studied at the Universities of Barcelona and Lisbon.
He moved around the world from an early age as, in his words,"an army brat" and had his first taste of Spanish life when he lived in Barcelona for two years in the mid eighties. After a period in Lisbon and then in London, he returned to live in Spain at the beginning of the 1992 Olympics. He currently lives in Madrid with his wife Katharine Blanca Scott and their two children Lucas and Samuel.
His book Ghosts of Spain: Travels through a country’s hidden past (2007)[2] was translated into five languages and sold over 100,000 copies worldwide.
In 2010 he published a biography of Catherine of Aragon, the Spanish infanta who was Henry VIII's first wife, with Faber and Faber in London and Walker in New York. Catherine of Aragon was BBC Radio 4's Book of the Week in November 2010 and sold some 20,000 copies in hardback in the United Kingdom. It was due to be published in Spanish and Russian in 2012.
